Zonta Club of Lockport
“Says No to Violence Against Women”
Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women is a campaign for Zontians.
The purpose is to raise their voices and help bring awareness
to this issue and advocate on behalf of
gender-based survivors of violence against women .
The campaign consists of sixteen days of activism.
From November 25th through December 10th each year, the Zonta Club of Lockport New York, Inc. participates in daily activities to support Zonta International’s Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign.
Globally, one in three women experience physical or sexual
violence mostly by an intimate partner. Violence against women
and girls is one of the most pervasive human rights violations.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, evidence has shown that
all types of gender-based violence, particularly domestic violence,
have escalated.
Locally, our club’s activities include a newspaper article,
Facebook postings, Instagram postings, a prayer service,
proclamations and signs around Lockport.
According to UN Women:
“This is the Shadow Pandemic growing amidst the COVID-19
crisis and we need a global collective effort to stop it.”
As COVID-19 cases continue to burden health services,
essential services, such as domestic violence shelters
and helplines, have reached capacity. More needs to be done
to prioritize addressing violence against women in
COVID-19 response and recovery efforts.
Today, in Niagara County, violence against women arrests
from January 1, 2020 through June 30, 2020 totaled 1,740.
This is 24 more cases since the same time frame last year,
which totaled 1,716.
The YWCA of the Niagara Frontier is the County’s sole provider
of rape crisis response and counseling, advocacy, and crisis housing.
The YWCA of the Niagara Frontier’s 24/7 Domestic Violence Hotline
provides phone counseling, support, and referrals for
emergency shelter or housing.
The YWCA Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Hotline is
(716) 433-6716.
Protecting women from violence is an inherent human right.
Please help us in raising awareness.
